Mean Centering

This post only covers the definition explanation of ‘mean centering’. Let us understand through an example.

Let us consider a set A = {10, 20, 30, 40, 50}

The mean of this set is:
(10 + 20 + 30 + 40 + 50) / 5     =     150 / 5     =    30

Mean = 30.

Now let us subtract the mean from each item in the set. We have:
A’ = { 10-30,  20-30,  30 – 30, 40 – 30, 50-30}
A’ = { -20. -10, 0, 10, 20}

Mean for the set A’ is 0.

Mean centering produces a new data set which has the same relationship as that of original set, but the mean becomes 0.
